How to target a US audience on YouTube
You can't target the United States with a channel setting: YouTube says a channel's location isn't used to recommend its videos.1 You get a US audience when a video is in a language viewers there understand, about something they care about, and good enough that people like them keep watching. The one place you pick a country is a paid promotion.2 On TikTok, too, none of the signals listed for the For You feed is a country the creator chooses.16

There is no country switch
The usual advice goes like this: set the channel's country to the United States, add “USA” to the tags, upload through a VPN at New York prime time. None of it targets anyone.
The reason is in how recommendations work. YouTube says its system doesn't push a video out to an audience. It looks for videos for each viewer when they open YouTube, based on what that viewer watches and doesn't watch, searches for, likes, dislikes and marks as not interesting.1 Every item on that list is something a viewer does, not something an uploader sets.
What you can change
- The language of the audio, the title and the description.
- The topic, and whether it matters outside your country.
- The thumbnail and any text on screen.
- How well the video holds the viewers who try it.
What doesn't target a country
- Tags such as “USA”. YouTube says tags matter little; their main use is catching common misspellings.1
- Publishing at US peak hours. Timing can lift the first views, but YouTube says it has no known effect on how a video does over the long term.1
- The location on the upload form. It records where the video was filmed.3
- A VPN. None of the signals YouTube lists is about where the uploader is.
What decides which country watches a video
You can work on the first three. The fourth belongs to the viewer.
Language
A viewer in Chicago has to understand the video. When a video has several audio tracks, YouTube starts with the one in the viewer's preferred language, which it infers from their watch history. A translated title and description let the video be found by searches in that language.4
Topic
Home takes into account how often a viewer watches a channel or a topic, and search looks at how closely the title, description and content fit what was typed.1 A recipe or a repair travels. Local news and local jokes mostly don't.
Viewer response
On Home, YouTube also looks at how a video has done with similar viewers: whether it held their interest and left them satisfied.1 It doesn't say that similar means the same country. Still, the first people who watch the English version are the evidence the system has about viewers like them.
The viewer's own settings
Each viewer has a location setting that shapes the recommendations, charts and news they see,5 and can set preferred languages for audio, titles and descriptions.6 Those settings belong to the viewer. You can only make a video that fits them.
What an English version changes, and what it doesn't
The same video, now watchable in English
A viewer who speaks only English can't follow the speech in a Spanish, Portuguese or Hindi video. An English version removes that barrier and nothing else. Play the clip and switch the language: the kitchen and the cook are the same, and the speech is in English. The English track of this demo is also lip-synced, which is an optional paid add-on. A plain dub changes only the sound.
It changes
It doesn't change
- The topic. A video about a local election stays local in any language.
- The thumbnail and on-screen text, though YouTube lets you add localized thumbnails.4
- The competition. Your video now sits next to everything made in English on the topic.
- Which English-speaking country watches. The four things above decide that.

YouTube reported that creators who added audio tracks in other languages got, on average, more than 25% of their watch time from views in a language other than the video's primary one.7 That is an average, not a typical result, and it counts languages, not countries. The guide to running a channel in several languages compares an added track with a separate channel.
YouTube may already be doing part of this. Automatic dubbing is on by default for eligible creators, its language list includes Spanish, Portuguese and Hindi into English, and you can review, unpublish or delete those dubs in YouTube Studio.6 If the automatic English track is good enough, use it; the lesson on YouTube automatic dubbing shows how to check. A dub you make yourself is an MP4 you can post anywhere, not only a track on that one YouTube video.
Test it with a few videos first
Dubbing a whole channel before you know who will watch is the expensive way to find out.
Pick videos that can travel
Choose three to five of your own videos whose topic doesn't depend on your country: a how-to, a recipe, a review. Leave out local news and wordplay.
Make the English version
In DubSync you upload the original file (MP4, MOV or M4V, up to 150 minutes and 1 GB), choose English and see the minutes and the cost before anything starts. You download an MP4 with a voice created from each speaker, the background audio kept and no visible watermark. There is no script editing, so ask an English speaker to watch it before it goes out.
Translate what surrounds the video
Write an English title and description, and add an English thumbnail if yours has text on it.4 Use the words US viewers would type, with American spelling and the units they know. DubSync changes the speech only. It doesn't write titles, and it doesn't post to any platform.
Publish, then wait
Upload the English file to a channel for that language, or add it to the existing video as an audio track. The track route needs access to advanced features and an audio-only file, so export the audio from the dubbed MP4 in any editor first, and delete YouTube's automatic English dub if one exists.4 The multi-language audio guide has the steps. Then give the video a few weeks before you judge it.

Read the geography report
The only way to know where a video is watched is to look. In YouTube Studio, open Analytics and select Audience.8 Under a report, See more or Advanced mode opens the expanded view, where you can filter and break the data down by geography.9 Look before you change anything: the channel may already have US watch time in its original language.
- Top geographies shows which countries account for the most watch time on your channel.8 Note it before the test and compare a few weeks after.
- Top subtitle/CC languages breaks your audience down by the subtitle language they use.8 It can point to viewers who don't follow the original audio.
- Audio language. Once a video has more than one track, Analytics breaks views and watch time down by audio language.4 This tells you whether the English track is played at all.
- Missing rows are normal. YouTube limits some data, geography included, when a video or channel has too little traffic in the selected period, and it doesn't publish the thresholds.10
Why the country matters: the ad-rate gap
Creators ask about US viewers because of advertising. Advertisers choose the countries they want to reach, and the ad market is more competitive in some countries than in others, so the price of an ad differs too.12

In this dataset the median in the United States was $11.95 per 1,000 YouTube ad impressions, ~7× as much as in Mexico and ~9× as much as in Brazil.11 CPM is what advertisers pay, not creator income. What a creator receives per 1,000 views is lower: it is counted after YouTube's share and over all views, including those that showed no ad.12 The country table lists all 49 markets, and the calculator turns them into illustrative ranges.
An English version reaches more than the United States
Google's ad reach figures put more YouTube users in India than in the United States, though the two counts come from different months of 2025.1413 They count the people ads can reach, whatever language they watch in, not English-language viewers. But English is widely used in India, and advertisers paid ~12× as much per 1,000 ad impressions in the United States as there.11
In the same data, advertisers paid less in India and the Philippines than in Mexico or Brazil.11 A creator in Mexico whose English version is watched mostly in India has gained viewers, at a lower ad rate than at home. We found no published figure for how English viewing splits between countries, so any forecast of your own mix is a guess. The geography report is the only real answer.
How to target a US audience on TikTok
TikTok describes its For You feed in similar terms. Its help page lists what may shape a feed: what the viewer does (likes, shares, comments, videos watched to the end or skipped), details of the video (sounds, hashtags, view count, the country it was published in) and details of the viewer (language preference, location, device). For most users, TikTok says, the interactions weigh most.16
One item differs from YouTube's list: the country a video was published in is there, next to the viewer's own location and language. TikTok doesn't say how much it counts, and nothing on the list is a target country that the creator picks. What you control is the same as on YouTube: the language spoken in the video, the caption and hashtags, and a topic that works outside your country. A dubbed vertical video is a normal MP4 that you post like any other; the page on translating TikTok videos also explains how TikTok sets an account's region.
Questions before you start
If I dub my videos into English, will YouTube show them to US viewers?
Not automatically. English audio lets English speakers follow the video, and an English title and description let them find it. Whether viewers in the US, India or Australia end up watching depends on the topic and on how each group responds. Test a few videos and read the geography report.
Do more US viewers mean a channel earns more?
Not by itself. CPM is what advertisers pay, and a channel receives less: its revenue is counted after YouTube's share and across all views, including those that showed no ad. CPM also moves with the time of year and the ad formats shown.12
What is the best time to post for US viewers?
No posting time sends a video to the United States. YouTube says publishing when your audience is most active can help early views but isn't known to change how a video does in the long run. Timing matters more for Premieres and live streams, and for those YouTube points to the When your viewers are on YouTube report in Analytics.1
Why do most of my English views come from India or the Philippines?
Does the viewer's country matter for Shorts too?
Yes, the split is made country by country. YouTube pools the ad revenue from the Shorts feed and distributes it by each creator's share of engaged views in each country. Creators keep 45% of what they are allocated.15
How do I target a US audience on TikTok?
Not with a setting. The signals TikTok lists for the For You feed are the viewer's interactions, language and location, and details of the video such as the country it was published in. None is a target country chosen by the creator.16 Post in the language those viewers speak, on a topic that works outside your country.
Do I need to speak English to publish an English version?
No. DubSync translates the speech and creates an English voice from each speaker's own, similar but not identical. There is no script editing, so ask someone who speaks English to watch the result, and write or check the English title and description separately.
